Reporting Identity Theft Cases
In recent years, the number of identity theft cases has increased significantly. Initially, law enforcement agencies were unsure of the best way to handle these cases as it there is not a lot of history behind the crime. There are many efforts currently underway to ensure that the right law enforcement agencies are made aware of the implications of identity theft cases. These efforts also include handing these cases in a way that allows the victim to take the necessary actions.
One of the first places to report identity theft cases is to the credit bureaus. This is an important step because it keeps the thief from obtaining any new accounts using your name. You do not have to contact all the credit bureaus. As long as you report identity theft cases to at least one of the credit bureaus, that bureau will be responsible for contacting those remaining.
It is also necessary to report identity theft cases to the necessary law enforcement agencies. Victims of identity theft should obtain a police report from their local police department or in the police department of the place where the theft occurred. In the case that the police department does not take the report for whatever reason you can choose to contact the country or state police department. The state attorney general can give information as to the laws regarding that state’s responsibility for reporting identity theft cases.
The final place to report identity theft cases is to the Federal Trade Commission, or the FTC. This agency can help you in many ways. Not only can they provide information about the proper steps that you need to take, they will also work to make sure that companies are abiding by laws associated with identity theft cases.
In order to recover from the damages received by identity theft it will be important to report the incident to all the necessary agencies.
