Identity Theft Insurance: Now a Necessity?

It’s really probable that any individual has already become a victim or has at least heard of identity theft. This is supported by some figures which disclose that up to 16% of adults have already become victims of this crime.

Identity theft can take several forms, but can be generally defined as the use of other people’s personal information for personal gain. Most of the time, the perpetrators of the crime would use the obtained information to make product purchases through other people’s credit card accounts or to apply for loans.

At present, credit card companies offer services such as the termination of the credit card account of an individual when he or reports the card to be stolen or lost. However, the potential expenses which can be incurred from this incident can only be minimized if the victim gets to report the stolen or lost card before the thief has been able to use it. Also, modern thieves may not even need the physical card to start charging your account.

Taking the lead from such an event, some companies are providing credit monitoring services. These organizations basically monitor any unlikely or suspicious spending habits for your credit card accounts. Also, daily and weekly reports may be delivered to a client to make them aware of any doubtful charges in their accounts.

Although the aforementioned services can come in handy sometimes, they would usually prove to be ineffective after expenses have already been racked up in the account or if your personal information has already been misused.

To provide an added measure of security against this problem, many insurance companies have begun offering identity theft insurance. The current charges are relatively modest for identity theft insurance, depending on how much you want covered. Some companies are requiring a yearly fee of $25 to cover amounts ranging from $15,000 to $25,000.

Individuals who have already undergone the lengthy process of identity theft “rehabilitation” are quite upbeat with the prospect of having identity theft insurance. They say that the insurance can prove to be invaluable for anyone who has to spend money and several days off work to clarify an identity theft incident.

In the coming years, it is expected that identity theft insurance would become as common as most standard insurance policies in the market. Although it really is practical advice to first be careful with how we handle our personal information, the idea of having a back-up plan such as identity theft insurance is a very welcome idea.
